No Pain Does Not Mean No Problem! Case Study of Hidden Scoliosis Found by Kyle Chiropractor Dr. Ryan Browning, D.C.

It’s easy to judge our health based on the presence or absence of pain or symptoms. This can be misleading when it comes to the spine, but it also applies to many parts of your body. Think of going to the dentist to get a check-up only to find out there is a cavity (aka rotten bone in your mouth), meanwhile you were oblivious to it because there was no pain. How many of you have had blood tested and been told by the M.D. that you now have Type 2 Diabetes? It was found by a blood test and there were probably no symptoms to give you a warning. There are so many other examples from arthritis and back problems to cancer and digestive issues where feeling a symptom was not part of the underlying condition.

Here’s some living proof for you that the spine is all connected and that one area affects the other areas of the spine. This week we had a patient come into our chiropractic office looking for help with her low back pain and hip pain. So there were symptoms in the low back, but there was no neck pain or mid back pain to speak of, but as always, we did a full evaluation and examined her entire spine. When we took her spinal x-rays there were minor findings in her low back, but we found scoliosis in her mid back! She was surprised at how significant the curve is and that her pain is in a different area. When posture starts to change or the spine begins to curve the entire spine is under more stress and pressure. This can cause back pain, pinched nerves resulting in feelings of sciatica, carpal tunnel, numbness and tingling and many unnoticed side effects. The spinal cord and nerves are the path of communication for the brain and when they begin to have interference along the pathways then the effects are felt wherever those nerves control. For example, let’s say the lumbar nerves are experiencing pressure as a result of spinal misalignment. The future effects could range from feeling sciatica down the leg and muscle weakness or even digestive issues or reproductive organ dysfunction. Many of the effects are not felt as low back pain or other noticeable symptoms, but rather as a decrease in function. These will not show up as symptoms but will affect the overall health and wellness of your body. Chiropractic care is designed to relieve this stress and pressure to the nerves thus allowing them to function at 100% so you can be healthy and that your body can function like it was designed to do. This is why we encourage you to not just come in for back pain or headaches (symptoms) but to make chiropractic care part of your health and wellness lifestyle to make sure you maintain good health and are able to stay active throughout your life. We are honored to help so many in and around the Kyle TX area with chiropractic care in their time of pain or car accident, sports injury and many other mishaps, but we want to help them to also get to live a true wellness lifestyle.

How to Avoid Chronic Neck Pain After Having Car Accident Whiplash of the Neck! ~by Dr. Ryan Browning, Chiropractor in Kyle TX

How to Avoid Chronic Neck Pain After Having Car Accident Whiplash of the Neck! ~by Dr. Ryan Browning, Chiropractor in Kyle TX
Often times we have new patients come into our chiropractic office with neck pain wondering why it started and how it happened. I listen in our consultation and hear how the pain started all of a sudden or they woke up one day and it was there and now won’t go away. This is a common way for people to find our chiropractic office as a solution to the recent pain in the neck. As I ask questions and talk with them there is an all too common conversation that happens… When I probe into past car accidents, whiplash, falls, sports injuries and such, all to often they tell me about a past accident that they didn’t pay attention to their body because there was no pain OR they had some stiffness or tension but it went away on its own and they assumed it was fine.
When an auto accident occurs it places stress on the bones, joints, discs, nerves, muscles, tendons and ligaments that it is not designed to absorb. Our spine may absorb it and not cause immediate or long-lasting symptoms, but there can still be underlying problems that will eventually cause problems like spinal misalignment and ligament laxity. Sometimes the pain and symptoms are immediate and other times they are underlying for months or even years. However, if left untreated they will eventually make themselves known and cause neck pain, back pain, headaches or other pains.
Spinal misalignment affects the overall smooth movement of the vertebrae and can affect the function of the nerve supplying various muscles or organs of the body. These pinched nerves eventually cause the pain and leave many people wondering how it happened when they feel the pain later on. Interference to the nerves can affect the function to the body part or system that nerve is powering. This can lead to stiffness and overall feeling less well and more stressed.
Ligament laxity is when the ligaments absorb a force and then do not retain their same strength in supporting the spine. This results in the neck curvature changing shape and altering the posture of the spine that will create more compression on the bones, discs and the nerves too. This will lead to future disc degeneration and arthritis.
This instance happens way too often because many people don’t know to get checked by a whiplash certified chiropractor after any motor vehicle accident. The sooner spinal misalignment, ligament laxity and pinched nerves are found and fixed the better the result will be and the less likely to have pain down the road because of the accident.
If you need help or have questions about your health we are happy to sit down and talk with you about any problem. We love getting people out of pain and into health!

Local Chiropractor in Kyle TX Helps Patients Avoid Back Surgery!

Local Chiropractor in Kyle TX Helps Patient Avoid Back Surgery!
Wow, I’m always amazed at the body’s ability to heal itself with the help of chiropractic care!  This week we had a patient cancel his spinal surgery appointment because of his progress with chiropractic care in our office!
Many traditional medical doctors are still unaware at the benefits of chiropractic care.  In fact, this patient came in as a last resort.  Already receiving every other treatment under the sun for the last five years by his family practitioner and pain management doctor, physical therapist, etc, etc, with an appointment for spinal surgery and it was NEVER even suggested to see a chiropractor!
Research has proven time and again that it is the most effective, most affordable solution to many causes of back pain, neck pain, scoliosis, whiplash, headaches and migraines too.  Chiropractic care helps people to utilize fewer medications like pain pills, muscle relaxers, anti-inflammatories and spinal injections. Regular chiropractic patients have fewer surgeries, hospitalizations, urgent care visits and unplanned trips to the medical doctor.  Chiropractic has outperformed pain medication and physical therapy in many studies to date.  So why doesn’t everyone (or at least every doctor) know about this????????  There are many reasons that I won’t elaborate on, but let’s just say that we (chiropractors) aren’t helping the pharmaceutical establishment very much and thus do not share much of the media spotlight.
Since many doctors are still uninformed or unwilling to promote the benefits of chiropractic care, the ones that need to know these things are everyday people, you and I, our neighbors and friends.  Those that want to have good health, are struggling with their health or have tried treatments that are not helping.  Neck or back surgery will have permanent consequences and do not guarantee to fix the pain.  Chiropractic aims to correct the cause of the spinal or nerve condition and restore proper function.  Think of it like our patient did, if chiropractic treatment does not fix the cause, then you can still get surgery afterwards.
It is always rewarding to help a person regain health, regain life- ability to work and provide for a family, or playing with children and grandchildren, resuming a sport or workout regimen, sleep, or just being able to FEEL GOOD AGAIN!
We are here in Kyle TX to serve our community and help you get OUT of PAIN and IN to HEALTH. If you are wondering how chiropractic care may help you, take the opportunity for a consultation in our office to discuss if we can help.

Better Posture = Better Health, Importance of Posture Explained by Kyle TX Chiropractor

Better Posture = Better Health
Most of us were told by mom to sit up straight and stand up tall, but that’s about all we learn about posture growing up!  Most Americans do not recognize posture as an important aspect of protecting your health.  Here’s a few reasons why you should take notice…
1- Good posture affects the spinal curve in the neck.  Most people who work at a computer fall into bad habits of slumping forward and sticking the head forward.  Doing this over the course of years will literally change the curvature that should be preserved in the neck.  Once this curvature change begins you will become much more likely to experience headaches including tension and migraine headaches, neck pain and upper back tightness.  When you “preserve the curve” your spine will experience much less stress and the muscles can relax easier.
2- Your posture affects your breathing.  Changes in the spinal curvature and posture changes affect your ability to get the maximum amount of oxygen.  When the spinal column has lost some of its ability to move and expand then the chest will not fully expand which affects the lungs capacity to house as much oxygen.  After beginning chiropractic care, those very aware of their oxygen intake such as athletes and singers will notice an immediate improvement in lung function due to the spine’s increased ability to move.
3- Bad posture can pinch nerves.  An important aspect of health is the function of your nervous system, the brain and spinal cord, to relay messages throughout the body via the nerves. When the spine has changed shape or alignment due to poor posture then the openings where the nerves come off the spine begin to close up.  This causes stress on the nerves or a pinched nerve.  Sometimes you can feel a pinched nerve when it goes down the leg (sciatica) or when it goes down the arm.  Many times you can’t feel the actual effect of a pinched nerve when the particular nerve goes to the digestive system or the lungs, etc. However, these pinched nerves will still affect overall health, ability to sleep, your energy level and other aspects of your body’s physiological function.

5 Things To Do After You Get In a Car Accident -near San Marcos TX

5 Things To Do After You Get In a Car Accident near San Marcos TX
1- First at the scene you will want to have a police report to properly document the car wreck.  All too often, the at fault party assured the victim that they will play fair and then later on dodges responsibility.  If there is nothing in writing at the scene then you may be left vulnerable to pay for damages to your car and your neck pain from the whiplash.
2- Contact a personal injury certified Chiropractor to be evaluated as soon as possible, regardless of your level of back pain and other symptoms or lack thereof.  Often times the pain will take a few days to show up, but the sooner you are evaluated and begin chiropractic care and needed therapies the less chance you have to develop scar tissue and other common side effects of a motor vehicle accident.
3- Call your car insurance to open a claim and get a claim number.  This lets the car insurance know that an accident occurred.  Do not agree to a settlement to close the claim until your car damage and your chiropractic treatment are both taken completed.  If you are the at-fault driver then you can still get necessary treatment covered by your car insurance.  It is called personal injury protection.  This benefit is there to use specifically for this purpose- getting into a car accident that was your fault.  You can use these benefits without any risk of your insurance rates going up, unless you were to use these benefits on three or more occasions within the same year.
4- Decide if you need a personal injury lawyer in your case.  When you seek treatment from a chiropractor that has experience in personal injury, they can usually give you a good idea if your situation would benefit from an attorney’s services or not.  They may be able to refer a few good ones to you so you don’t just have to call a random law firm too.
5- Finish your treatment plan to resolve any injuries caused by the car crash.  Ideally, you want to finish your treatment just as good as you were before the accident occurred.  Your chiropractor should guide you through the process of getting rid of pain and restoring optimal function of your spine, muscle, ligaments and joints.  Chiropractic care can help you avoid chronic issues that many people deal with after an accident: chronic pain, premature arthritis, disc bulging, numbness and tingling, scar tissue, headaches, jaw pain, shoulder pain, and many others.
Dr. Ryan Browning is a certified Chiropractor to treat whiplash and car accident victims.  He attends seminars regularly to stay up to date on the newest treatments and legal issues in the personal injury world.  If you have been in a car accident recently and want to know if our office can help you, feel free to call and set up a complimentary consultation to find out if we can help you.  We help many throughout the San Marcos, Kyle, Buda, Wimberley and Austin area.
