No Pain Does Not Mean No Problem! Case Study of Hidden Scoliosis Found by Kyle Chiropractor Dr. Ryan Browning, D.C.

It’s easy to judge our health based on the presence or absence of pain or symptoms. This can be misleading when it comes to the spine, but it also applies to many parts of your body. Think of going to the dentist to get a check-up only to find out there is a cavity (aka rotten bone in your mouth), meanwhile you were oblivious to it because there was no pain. How many of you have had blood tested and been told by the M.D. that you now have Type 2 Diabetes? It was found by a blood test and there were probably no symptoms to give you a warning. There are so many other examples from arthritis and back problems to cancer and digestive issues where feeling a symptom was not part of the underlying condition.

Here’s some living proof for you that the spine is all connected and that one area affects the other areas of the spine. This week we had a patient come into our chiropractic office looking for help with her low back pain and hip pain. So there were symptoms in the low back, but there was no neck pain or mid back pain to speak of, but as always, we did a full evaluation and examined her entire spine. When we took her spinal x-rays there were minor findings in her low back, but we found scoliosis in her mid back! She was surprised at how significant the curve is and that her pain is in a different area. When posture starts to change or the spine begins to curve the entire spine is under more stress and pressure. This can cause back pain, pinched nerves resulting in feelings of sciatica, carpal tunnel, numbness and tingling and many unnoticed side effects. The spinal cord and nerves are the path of communication for the brain and when they begin to have interference along the pathways then the effects are felt wherever those nerves control. For example, let’s say the lumbar nerves are experiencing pressure as a result of spinal misalignment. The future effects could range from feeling sciatica down the leg and muscle weakness or even digestive issues or reproductive organ dysfunction. Many of the effects are not felt as low back pain or other noticeable symptoms, but rather as a decrease in function. These will not show up as symptoms but will affect the overall health and wellness of your body. Chiropractic care is designed to relieve this stress and pressure to the nerves thus allowing them to function at 100% so you can be healthy and that your body can function like it was designed to do. Dr. Ryan Browning’s 7 Super Simple Tips to Get Healthy in 2016!

It’s a new year and time has run out on last year’s resolutions.  It’s time to wipe the slate clean and start anew to create a new you!  Stop waiting for your luck to run out and start moving into action to gain health and to have the energy you have dreamed about!  Let’s get your BODY invigorated and finally feeling well, not having the stiffness, back pain and tension headaches that you have come to think are normal.  Let’s get your MIND feeling sharp and alert, feeling capable of doing more without getting overwhelmed.  Let’s get your SPIRIT feeling confident and strong, knowing that you can accomplish anything you want and overcome the obstacles along the way.  Let’s do this!

Here are my 7 Super Simple Tips for you to get started this year…

1- Get your spine aligned.  Get your chiropractic check up to uncover hidden musculoskeletal problems and to prevent injury as you begin exercising again. Take care of previous aches and pains so they don’t hold you back any longer. Start improving your spinal posture and take advantage of the many health benefits that can be yours! Talk to your chiropractor about how to maintain good spinal alignment and function.  Don’t wait for pain, choose maintenance care for your body!

2- Eat real food.  Sounds too easy, right?  In the fast paced world we live in now it has become increasingly difficult.  To keep it simple, eat “fresh fiber first” at each meal.  That means one vegetable before you proceed to the rest of the meal.  Focus on adding IN healthy foods before you focus on taking OUT the bad stuff.  We have a local farmer’s market that is a wonderful resource right here in Kyle, Texas, called Cross Plants and Produce that can help you eat fresh, organic and locally grown foods.

3- Move your muscles.  The range of motion and mobility that your body will maintain throughout your life is dependent upon the motion of the joints (chiropractic treatment) and the motion of the muscles (exercise and stretching).  Strength training will improve your core stability and your confidence.  Stretching will promote flexibility and injury prevention.  Need some help getting started?  Lauren Swindell is a great local exercise physiologist with MWell Solutions who will game plan with you on how to get started.  She even offers group sessions with the Senior Fit exercise group.

4- Drink Water.  Right now you’re thinking, “OK, this list is way too simple.”  When I say drink water I mean JUST water.  A simple google search can educate you on all the unnecessary elements that are in your water today…and it’s much more that H2O!  This takes away from the health benefits that your body needs from daily water consumption to maintain hydration.  An efficient system in the house to remove unwanted products, elements, medications and toxins in the water.  Another local resource in our community located next to Plum Creek is Water Tree of Kyle.  They can educate you on how to best solve this problem.

5- Sleep More. The busy lifestyle doesn’t give enough time to rest, relax, ponder and rejuvenate. Sleep is key to help the body heal and refresh every system. From the nervous system (brain and spinal cord) to the digestive system and even the circulatory system is much better off with more sleep. Discipline yourself to let your body heal each day with sufficient sleep.

6- Live Naturally.  Over the last century Americans have been conditioned that there is a magic pill for EVERYTHING!  From weight loss, depression and anxiety, ADHD, pain relief, stress, hormonal imbalance, etc, etc, etc, the list is infinite.  Instead of looking to cover up the symptom with a chemical intervention, how about looking at what lifestyle choice, habit or environmental factor is the root cause and looking to fix that cause?!  I see and discuss related issues with patients everyday in the office while patients lay on my chiropractic table. Better Posture = Better Health, Importance of Posture Explained by Kyle TX Chiropractor

Better Posture = Better Health
Most of us were told by mom to sit up straight and stand up tall, but that’s about all we learn about posture growing up!  Most Americans do not recognize posture as an important aspect of protecting your health.  Here’s a few reasons why you should take notice…
1- Good posture affects the spinal curve in the neck.  Most people who work at a computer fall into bad habits of slumping forward and sticking the head forward.  Doing this over the course of years will literally change the curvature that should be preserved in the neck.  Once this curvature change begins you will become much more likely to experience headaches including tension and migraine headaches, neck pain and upper back tightness.  When you “preserve the curve” your spine will experience much less stress and the muscles can relax easier.
2- Your posture affects your breathing.  Changes in the spinal curvature and posture changes affect your ability to get the maximum amount of oxygen.  When the spinal column has lost some of its ability to move and expand then the chest will not fully expand which affects the lungs capacity to house as much oxygen.  After beginning chiropractic care, those very aware of their oxygen intake such as athletes and singers will notice an immediate improvement in lung function due to the spine’s increased ability to move.
3- Bad posture can pinch nerves.  An important aspect of health is the function of your nervous system, the brain and spinal cord, to relay messages throughout the body via the nerves. When the spine has changed shape or alignment due to poor posture then the openings where the nerves come off the spine begin to close up.  This causes stress on the nerves or a pinched nerve.  Sometimes you can feel a pinched nerve when it goes down the leg (sciatica) or when it goes down the arm.  Many times you can’t feel the actual effect of a pinched nerve when the particular nerve goes to the digestive system or the lungs, etc. However, these pinched nerves will still affect overall health, ability to sleep, your energy level and other aspects of your body’s physiological function.

One day you wake up and notice a pain for the first time.  It’s not the usual back pain as you’ve grown accustomed to a backache now and then, but this one feels different.  It’s as if the leg is asleep due to numbness or has a tingling sensation to it.  You start to wonder what is causing this. Ever have this happen to you?
Numbness and tingling down the leg is referred to as sciatica.  It occurs when there is pressure on one of the nerves that goes down the leg.  All of the nerves traveling down the leg start on the spinal cord in the low back (lumbar spine) and branch off into different cords that travel to different areas of the leg.  These nerves are what send messages to all of the structures down the leg from the brain to communicate.  When there is misalignment in the spinal bones of the low back this can cause a pinched nerve by putting pressure on the nerve itself, creating the numbness or tingling sensation.
When the spine is in proper alignment and the motion of the joints is moving well, you are much less likely to have pressure on the sciatic nerve or any other nerve pain.  Other factors that can put pressure on a nerve are the discs.  A bulging disc or herniated disc can also put pressure directly on a nerve.  They can also create low back pain or neck pain, and other symptoms.
