4 Things To Do After a Car Accident – Advice from Dr. Ryan Browning, Whiplash Chiropractor in Kyle TX

4 Things To Do After a Car Accident – Advice from Dr. Ryan Browning, Whiplash Chiropractor in Kyle TX
Having a car crash is never planned and can be anything from a minor inconvenience to a major life-altering event. Most are somewhere in between.  The goal of this article is to give you information that hopefully you will never need. However, should you or a loved one get into a car accident it this information can reduce the severity of whiplash injuries or prevent them from becoming permanent. Scar tissue, ligament damage, joint movement and nerve function are just a few auto injuries that can be prevented with the proper treatment and by acting quickly after the accident.
1st- If there is a true medical emergency, go to the emergency room!  If you are in a lot of pain, suspect broken ribs or other broken bones, have head trauma or dizziness, you need to be checked in a trauma center. Many people hate the thought of going to the E.R. because you may spend hours there, being around lots of very sick people or due to the fear of the cost of treatment. However, if there is an emergency that needs to be treated, cost becomes insignificant and time becomes very valuable.
2nd- The next step to healing from whiplash and other car accident injuries is proper care at home. Ice is very important to reduce inflammation ASAP! Ice pushes swelling and inflammation away from the site of injury or trauma and helps the muscles, tendons and ligaments to heal. Heat is not the best at this time because it brings blood flow towards the area of inflammation, making it more difficult for the injured area to heal. After ice to the affected areas, other home care instructions are to get plenty of rest and sleep. For more information on proper sleep, click here. After a car wreck the body experiences a high level of stress and much needed healing to take place which will use up the body’s energy, so you will feel fatigue and maybe sluggish.  Also, proper hydration is needed to help rid the body of excess toxins. Water and electrolytes are essential to help the body to heal properly. For more information on how much water to drink or how to hydrate, click here.
3rd- Get a full chiropractic examination by a whiplash and personal injury certified Chiropractor. Many people already know that after an auto accident they will go to the chiropractor for treatment, but what they don’t know is that auto injury treatment is not a specific focus of training in chiropractic school. Any chiropractor can see the patient after the motor vehicle accident, but not all are specifically trained to do so. There is post-doctorate training available to become a personal injury and whiplash certified chiropractor. You need to be seen by a Doctor of Chiropractic with specific training in car accidents to more specifically evaluate the condition and determine the needed treatment. X-ray evaluation should be included. Often times MRI may be done to determine if disc herniation has occurred or other disc problems. Your chiropractor will need to be accustomed to working together with medical specialists including: neurologist, orthopedist, radiologist, pain management specialist, primary care and more.
4th- Following the treatment recommendations. This may sound too simple, but it can’t be overstated. Too often people don’t allow their body the full recovery post-accident and end up paying the price later on with chronic neck pain or other permanent damage like scar tissue and ligament laxity. For many, the treatment duration goes beyond pain and symptoms to allow enough time for the body to heal and recover fully.
Hopefully this information helps you should you have the misfortune of a car wreck. If so, review this information and always feel free to call me directly at the office 512-405-0400.

How to Avoid Chronic Neck Pain After Having Car Accident Whiplash of the Neck! ~by Dr. Ryan Browning, Chiropractor in Kyle TX

How to Avoid Chronic Neck Pain After Having Car Accident Whiplash of the Neck! ~by Dr. Ryan Browning, Chiropractor in Kyle TX
Often times we have new patients come into our chiropractic office with neck pain wondering why it started and how it happened. I listen in our consultation and hear how the pain started all of a sudden or they woke up one day and it was there and now won’t go away. This is a common way for people to find our chiropractic office as a solution to the recent pain in the neck. As I ask questions and talk with them there is an all too common conversation that happens… When I probe into past car accidents, whiplash, falls, sports injuries and such, all to often they tell me about a past accident that they didn’t pay attention to their body because there was no pain OR they had some stiffness or tension but it went away on its own and they assumed it was fine.
When an auto accident occurs it places stress on the bones, joints, discs, nerves, muscles, tendons and ligaments that it is not designed to absorb. Our spine may absorb it and not cause immediate or long-lasting symptoms, but there can still be underlying problems that will eventually cause problems like spinal misalignment and ligament laxity. Sometimes the pain and symptoms are immediate and other times they are underlying for months or even years. However, if left untreated they will eventually make themselves known and cause neck pain, back pain, headaches or other pains.
Spinal misalignment affects the overall smooth movement of the vertebrae and can affect the function of the nerve supplying various muscles or organs of the body. These pinched nerves eventually cause the pain and leave many people wondering how it happened when they feel the pain later on. Interference to the nerves can affect the function to the body part or system that nerve is powering. This can lead to stiffness and overall feeling less well and more stressed.
Ligament laxity is when the ligaments absorb a force and then do not retain their same strength in supporting the spine. This results in the neck curvature changing shape and altering the posture of the spine that will create more compression on the bones, discs and the nerves too. This will lead to future disc degeneration and arthritis.
This instance happens way too often because many people don’t know to get checked by a whiplash certified chiropractor after any motor vehicle accident. The sooner spinal misalignment, ligament laxity and pinched nerves are found and fixed the better the result will be and the less likely to have pain down the road because of the accident.
If you need help or have questions about your health we are happy to sit down and talk with you about any problem. We love getting people out of pain and into health!

Chronic Neck Pain After Car Accidents Treatment by Chiropractor in Kyle TX

As a chiropractor treating patients in car accidents I often see patients come in with neck pain that have a car accident whiplash injury in their history.  The story often goes that they were young and bounced back rather quickly after the accident not thinking they were injured.  Years later they develop nagging neck pain for no good reason at all.  After a chiropractic and orthopedic examination in the office and taking x-rays I often get the rest of the story…
A car wreck causes G-forces to go through the body (that it is not prepared for) at various points in the body.  As the neck is in extension position, such as it would be after being rear ended from behind, it becomes a vulnerable area for the force from the accident to damage.
How does the accident cause damage?  On the surface it can cause muscular damage which would result in tension, muscle spasm, pain, etc.  It also creates joint inflammation from the spinal joints crashing into one another and causing sharp pain and inflammation.  The muscular damage is the easiest and quickest to resolve. The joint damage usually takes more time.  The intervertebral disc acts like a shock absorber to the spinal vertebra and are often herniated (broken) or compressed creating bulging from the injury.  These can create chronic vulnerabilities in the neck chronically.  If a herniated disc puts pressure on a nerve then it can create nerve symptoms like numbness and tingling and will require proper management.  The spinal ligaments can also become inflamed and stretched in a motor vehicle accident.  Stretching of the spinal ligaments may or may not contribute to short-term pain and symptoms, but they are likely to contribute to problems down the road. Loosened ligaments may allow the curvature of the neck to change creating more tension and pressure in the neck and upper back that eventually becomes chronic pain.
These are just a few of the effects that a car accident or whiplash injury can cause.  If you are ever in a car crash make sure you are evaluated by a personal injury certified chiropractor that does an examination and x-rays to determine what treatment can resolve the injury and prevent it from becoming a chronic pain situation for you.

Car Accident and Injury Mistakes to Avoid

Car Accident and Injury Mistakes to Avoid
At the office, we see many people who have been in different types of car accidents.  It could be a rear end, head on collision or a T-bone from a side swipe.  We’ve even seen patients that were hit by a car as a pedestrian on a motorcycle or an 18 wheeler accident.  Regardless of how the collision occurred and the variety of whiplash and other injuries or pain associated with the car wreck, there are certain car accident treatment guidelines that should be followed.
Let’s start with what to do immediately following a motor vehicle accident.  First, if there is significant pain or obvious injury at the time of accident then go to the emergency room to be checked.  Any broken bones or serious medical injuries will need to be addressed immediately.  For the typical car crash victim, they will x-ray to check for broken bones and prescribe pain medication or muscle relaxers.
At home treatment starts with the ice pack.  Ice is great for reducing inflammation because it pushes blood flow and swelling away from the injury to allow damaged tissues to heal quicker.  Heat is generally a mistake at this time.  Heat will bring blood flow to the area, thus making it more difficult for the injured muscles, tendons or ligaments to heal.  So stay with ice.  Drinking lots of water to hydrate the muscles during the healing process is important to help with muscle spasms and overall neck pain and back pain.  Fatigue can set in due to the body going into overdrive using all of its energy to heal the damaged tissues and joints so rest is important at this stage of healing.
Find a chiropractor certified in personal injury with experience in treating whiplash.  Not all chiropractors are the same and some do not do very much treatment for car accident injuries.  A personal injury certified chiropractor is essential to diagnose injuries to the soft tissues and joints.  The spine needs to have proper alignment, curvatures and movement.  The shoulders, hips and other extremity joints can be checked too.  Examination procedures will include x-ray analysis, orthopedic evaluation, neurological testing and hands on feeling of the joints and muscles.  Afterwards a good treatment plan can be formed to get the patient feeling better from pain and symptoms, get them active and fully functional again and most important is to resolve the injuries now so that there are not long-lasting effects.  Your chiropractor should have a good medical referral network should the need for MRI, orthopedic, neurologic, pain management treatments need to be part of the treatment to resolve your injuries.
Many chiropractors also work together with a personal injury attorney to help you get full treatment under the auto claim so that you don’t have to pay out of pocket up front for all expenses related to your treatment.  This is where a good certified personal injury chiropractor will save you many headaches, literally and figuratively.
The worst mistake you can make after getting into an auto accident is to assume that it will be fine or just cover up the symptoms at home with Tylenol or another pill.  These will not fix the problem and could allow the injuries to get worse in the near future or cause you permanent damage later on from allowing the injury to just sit there.  This happens all too often and years down the road can be too late to effectively treat your condition.  If you have any further questions or would like to speak for a brief consultation, my door is always open to you.

Chiropractor in Kyle TX Offers Free Consultation for Car Accident Victims

Have you ever been in a car wreck?  Many people aren’t sure what to do after getting into one.  From a fender bender to a totaled car accident, bodily injuries vary greatly.  The person in the motor vehicle accident’s physical condition, age, health, force of the trauma, head position, and other factors affect the visible and underlying damage done.  It is common for the onset of pain, whiplash symptoms or post-concussion syndrome to be delayed a few days after the crash.

Some injuries are uncomfortable and painful for the first few weeks or months following the whiplash. These include sprains and strains causing neck pain, back pain, headaches, shoulder and hip pain, muscle spasm, tension, trouble sleeping, feeling fatigue, anxiety, nervousness, etc. In most cases the sooner treatment begins after the accident the better. This can shorten the recovery time to getting back to 100%.

Other car wreck injuries can take longer to treat and resolve, such as: herniated disc, nerve pain, concussion, torn muscle, ligament damage. Did you know that if the ligaments in the neck are stretched a mere 3 millimeters they can cause long-term pain and symptoms.  Damaged muscles need assistance to heal to avoid scar tissue. Ligaments need chiropractic treatment so that the damage is not permanent and the neck can regain normal range of motion and normal alignment again.

There are many other possibilities and variables involved in these car accidents. Our office offers a consultation to talk about your situation and see if chiropractic care and therapy is the proper treatment for you.  If it is not, we also have a full team of medical specialists in our referral network.  We also work with personal injury attorneys for those that need this service.

Chiropractor In Kyle TX Answers, “What Should I Do After Getting Into a Car Accident?”

Getting into a car accident can range from being an inconvenience and a pain in the neck to traumatic and life altering.  Whiplash, bruises, ligament sprains, muscle strains, pain, herniated discs and broken bones are all possibilities that your body experiences after a motor vehicle accident.  A totaled car, inability to work, and dealing with insurance adjusters can be major hassles at a time of vulnerability.

After a car accident, the main concern is for your physical health and getting any necessary medical treatment.  When pain is immediate, a trip to the emergency room may be in order.  Some patients refuse this due to financial concern, not knowing that it can be covered through auto insurance or attorney settlement.  The next step should be to find a certified car accident chiropractor to assess the rest of the damage.  Most injuries will not include a broken bone, rather they are connective tissue injuries such as herniated discs, ligament damage, muscle tearing and joint inflammation.  These can be evaluated and corrected with the proper assessment, diagnosis and treatment.  Make sure to find an accident doctor like a chiropractor that is used to seeing car wreck victims.

One major concern that patients ask me is about the cost of care following their car wreck.  Treatment will need to address pain and symptoms, functional restoration and prevention of scar tissue formation.  This can take some time.  However, what most do not know is that their treatment can be covered either through the auto insurance or a personal injury attorney‘s representation.  Every situation is different and we are able to help guide you in making the decision on which way is best in your situation.  If a personal injury lawyer is needed, we are happy to refer you to the best.  One of the worst things to see is when a car accident victim does not get the appropriate chiropractic care because they are afraid of cost or unaware of how the process works.  We are used to helping patients to navigate this process.

Too often, auto insurance adjusters are worried with protecting their company and not with your physical well-being.  Their focus is to close the case as soon as possible.  Our focus is to make sure that your accident injuries are healed properly and completely, making sure you receive any and all necessary chiropractic and medical treatment along the way.  We want you to get on with life and not be slowed down by effects of the motor vehicle accident.

We are here to help you with any situation.  We see many car crash victims all throughout the Kyle, Buda and San Marcos area. Feel free to call our office and speak to me personally.

Personal injury has always been an area of practice that many shy away from and just don’t want to deal with.  Most medical doctors, especially specialists, won’t even consider letting you past the front desk once you mention two words: car accident.  It’s as if many offices are allergic to car accident victims and injuries and want to send them on to the next doctor.

There are a couple of reasons why car crash victims get the run around.  First, most doctors don’t want the insurance headache or their offices haven’t been trained to deal with the insurance hoops that need to be jumped.  Trying to figure out if the person is using their own auto insurance or the insurance of the at-fault driver is beyond many billing departments that simply don’t want this time consuming burden.  Sorry, but your whiplash induced pain in the neck is their figurative pain in the neck!

Once you bring the potential hire of a personal injury attorney to represent your interest with the auto insurance tactics they are sure to try, almost all healthcare offices wave the white surrender flag and decide to not put up a fight.  Unfortunately, all of these logistical challenges become the headache (no pun intended) of the car accident victim.

Dr. Ryan Browning is a Kyle TX Chiropractor in Plum Creek who sees many after their motor vehicle accident.  Over the years I have several cases each month and have seen a great variety of symptoms caused by car accidents.  The most common are whiplash of the neck, neck pain, back pain, headaches, numbness and tingling, sciatica, and muscle spasms.  We also diagnose and treat concussions, post-concussion symptoms, TMJ (jaw pain), herniated disk, bulging disk, and many other aches and pains.  Most people after the physical trauma of a car wreck experience one or many of the following symptoms: dizziness, sleep disturbance, constant discomfort, tension, pressure, head feels heavy, anziety, depression, moodiness and more.  The biggest challenge of the pain is the way it affects everyday life.  They are very likely to make it impossible or more difficult to go to work, take care of children, play sports or engage in hobbies, they can take away your desire to be social and even affect relationships physically, mentally and emotionally.

It is very satisfying to help someone get back to normal life after a car accident or motorcycle trauma! That’s why my office has always welcomed car accident victims and personal injury clients.  We have trained our staff to take the insurance burden off of the patient and reduce this stress.  I am also certified in personal injury to provide the best chiropractic treatment, refer for any necessary medical evaluations and have a network of MD’s that will accept referrals from us for personal injury cases.  We also are trained to help protect your legal situation in many ways.

If you or a loved one has been in a car accident, don’t wait to see if the pain will go away on its own, seek the proper chiropractic care from a certified chiropractor right here in Kyle to get you feeling better and reduce the risk of chronic pain.

5 Things To Do After You Get In a Car Accident -near San Marcos TX

5 Things To Do After You Get In a Car Accident near San Marcos TX
1- First at the scene you will want to have a police report to properly document the car wreck.  All too often, the at fault party assured the victim that they will play fair and then later on dodges responsibility.  If there is nothing in writing at the scene then you may be left vulnerable to pay for damages to your car and your neck pain from the whiplash.
2- Contact a personal injury certified Chiropractor to be evaluated as soon as possible, regardless of your level of back pain and other symptoms or lack thereof.  Often times the pain will take a few days to show up, but the sooner you are evaluated and begin chiropractic care and needed therapies the less chance you have to develop scar tissue and other common side effects of a motor vehicle accident.
3- Call your car insurance to open a claim and get a claim number.  This lets the car insurance know that an accident occurred.  Do not agree to a settlement to close the claim until your car damage and your chiropractic treatment are both taken completed.  If you are the at-fault driver then you can still get necessary treatment covered by your car insurance.  It is called personal injury protection.  This benefit is there to use specifically for this purpose- getting into a car accident that was your fault.  You can use these benefits without any risk of your insurance rates going up, unless you were to use these benefits on three or more occasions within the same year.
4- Decide if you need a personal injury lawyer in your case.  When you seek treatment from a chiropractor that has experience in personal injury, they can usually give you a good idea if your situation would benefit from an attorney’s services or not.  They may be able to refer a few good ones to you so you don’t just have to call a random law firm too.
5- Finish your treatment plan to resolve any injuries caused by the car crash.  Ideally, you want to finish your treatment just as good as you were before the accident occurred.  Your chiropractor should guide you through the process of getting rid of pain and restoring optimal function of your spine, muscle, ligaments and joints.  Chiropractic care can help you avoid chronic issues that many people deal with after an accident: chronic pain, premature arthritis, disc bulging, numbness and tingling, scar tissue, headaches, jaw pain, shoulder pain, and many others.
